Running a sales competition is a great way to motivate your reps... but it's only half the battle. The incentive at the end of the competition is what turns participation into real team energy. A well-chosen reward gives people a reason to lean in early, keeps momentum high through the middle stretch when energy often dips, and makes the finish line feel like something worth sprinting for.

The wrong incentive (or none at all) can leave even a well-designed competition falling flat. As a manager, you know your team best—and are perfectly positioned to choose the incentive they'll actually be excited about. You have the power to choose the rewards that fit your team's interests, culture, and importantly, budget.

Here's a list of proven favorites and fresh ideas to help you build an incentive lineup that keeps every competition feeling fun and new.

Recognition

This one is easy (and free!). Here are a few creative ways to recognize the reps who excel.

Verbal praise

There are a few ways to go about offering verbal praise. During your next team call, set aside a full minute for recognition from peers. Or, depending on your team culture, have people submit anonymous shoutouts beforehand and read them aloud during the meeting.

Hall of Fame

Set up a Slack channel (or go old school and hang up a whiteboard) to spotlight leaders in real time. (Ambition's leaderboards can really help with this!) Or, make a special Slack emoji that serves as a badge that the competition leader gets to set as their status.

Coffee with an exec

Offer the competition winner a few minutes of facetime with someone they wouldn't normally have access to. The reps who care about building their reputation with company leadership will be all about it.

Ambition loves:

  • "Good Gossip": At our weekly all-hands meeting, someone shares nice things they've overheard (or over-seen) about a team member that week.
  • Shoutouts Slack channel: Peer-to-peer praise shared in a public Slack channel

Experiences and Rewards

If you have budget for your competition, you can't go wrong with offering actual rewards that the rep can tailor to their interests.

Choose-your-own

Offer a gift card or a credit toward an experience. Think gift cards, Airbnb, airline, sporting events, or concerts.

Raffle Tickets

Let short "blitz" competition wins stack up, with the winners collecting raffle tickets toward a prize or reward. This helps more of the team stay engaged for longer.

Extra perk

Get creative by offering competition winners an extra day of floating PTO, a hall pass to skip a meeting, or being the first to pick from next cycle's leads.

Ambition loves:

A raffle ticket experience. Incorporate it into a recurring meeting to keep everyone up to date on the standings and inspire friendly competition.

Fun and Personal

Here's your chance to get really creative! Often, the sillier the better.

Inside joke trophies

Design a trophy (or "trophy") that only your team would understand. Maybe it's a WWE-style belt, a face-on-a-mug, or some traveling trophy based on a specific piece of team lore.

Big swings

Go for gold. Buy a local billboard, get a Cameo from a rep's favorite C-list celebrity, or ask for a feature in the company newsletter. The sky's the limit.

Ambition loves:

  • Challenge coins: People who exemplify company values are recognized each quarter with an Ambition challenge coin they can display on their desk.
  • An niche trophy: The winner of this year's Bug BBQ (yes, that's a thing) received a "trophy" of a grill to keep on their desk.

The best approach mixes it up. Pair low-cost recognition with occasional high-value experiences so every competition, big or small, feels worth the push.
